As a service member, you have the power to influence and protect those around you. The young people in your life look to you for support and guidance, and even protection. Make keeping nicotine products away from children your mission.
The nicotine in e-liquids, or vape juice, is what satisfies your craving for tobacco products. However, e-liquids can be harmful to children and pets. Between April 2022 and March 2023, 7,043 cases of e-liquid exposure were reported to America’s Poison Control Centers, most among children under the age of five.
Most adults know not to drink e-liquids. When it touches their skin, it can cause a burning or irritating sensation. E-liquid can poison children if they swallow it or when it touches their skin. Because children are smaller than adults, exposure to nicotine has a stronger effect on their bodies.
Symptoms of nicotine poisoning that happen soon after exposure can include nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, heavy breathing, headaches and dizziness. Symptoms that occur later after exposure can include diarrhea, low blood pressure, shock, coma, paralysis and respiratory failure. If your child might have nicotine poisoning, seek medical help right away.
Keeping tobacco products away from children helps prevent nicotine poisoning. If you use them or are in an environment where they are accessible, store vapes, e-liquids, nicotine pouches and other nicotine-containing products where children can’t reach them. Keep them in their original packaging so it’s clear what is inside and use childproof lids. Clean up any spills immediately using soap and water. Explain to children they should never touch these products because it’s bad for them. If you’re concerned a child may be experiencing nicotine poisoning, you should call the Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222) for free expert advice on what to do. Save their contact information in your phone so you have it ready if you ever need it. You can also visit PoisonHelp.org for online help.
Ultimately, you have the power to set a positive example and keep children safe from nicotine poisoning. If you use tobacco and are thinking about quitting, doing so is one of the best decisions you can make for your future, your career and your family. Start here!
