Ready for Anything: The Benefits of Quitting All Tobacco Products at Once

Are tobacco products like cigarettes, vapes and smokeless tobacco keeping you from being at peak readiness? Are you tired of carrying around (and paying for) more than one tobacco product? Are you worried about their long-term effects on your health? The good news is that, even if you use more than one tobacco product, you can quit them all! While some people try using a vape to help them quit smoking cigarettes, many find themselves both smoking and vaping. Any tobacco use has negative effects on your health. If you vape, use smokeless tobacco or nicotine pouches, and smoke cigarettes, the most straight-forward path to a tobacco-free life may be ditching them all at once. The good news is there are lots of resources here to help.

  • Write down the reasons you want to quit tobacco. You already know quitting tobacco can be tough. Remembering why you want to quit will help you stick to your plan and succeed when cravings and life try to stop you.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider about quitting. Your provider can talk to you about medications to help control nicotine cravings, counseling to manage withdrawal symptoms and other resources available to support you.
  • Make a plan to quit using all tobacco products. Use the resources available here to make your quit plan. Think about what challenges you might face, how you will manage cravings and withdrawals and stay on track to meet your goals.
  • Set a quit date. When you write your quit plan, pick a quit date to stop using tobacco products completely. You can do it!
  • Use strategies in your quit plan to manage tobacco cravings. When you quit tobacco, your body craves nicotine. Powering through nicotine cravings can be tough. Whether it’s working out, talking to a friend or taking up a new hobby, the strategies in your quit plan can help you get through it.
  • Celebrate your tobacco-free life. Quitting tobacco is a big deal. Be sure to take time to celebrate important milestones on your journey to a tobacco-free life.

If you’re concerned that quitting two or more tobacco products at the same time could affect your health or readiness, you should talk to your healthcare provider. They can give you personalized advice and help design a quit plan that’s right for you.
